Three days after a 25-year-old Jersey City man was fatally shot outside a Downtown Jersey City deli, friends and family are taking to social media to pay tribute to the man known as "King Reese."
Darren Maurice “Reese” Talington was shot at around 3:30 a.m. Saturday outside of the A-Plus Deli at 312 Grove St. after confronting a man who reportedly hit a female customer with a glass bottle, a clerk at the deli said.
Talington was shot by another person after stepping outside the store with the man, officials said.
Later that day, YouTube user MJ Productions posted a tribute video that includes footage of Talington dancing while out with friends one night. Meanwhile, friends are using #KingReese on Twitter to pay tribute, including @Drisco_RG who tweeted a link to a song he posted on Soundcloud.com.
"I know you're gone but the pain is hard to cope with. Lincoln-Snyder days we used to battle on that court quick. Enemies then and brothers right after, basketball brought us together, it was our passion," the artist raps.
Similar tributes can be found on Facebook, where friends are also using #KinGReese to remember Talington.
A viewing for Talington will be Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, 597 Bergen Ave., Jersey City, with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at the church.
On Saturday, Talington's father Andrew Kemp will help organize a free educational event for Jersey City students in grades 8 through 11 that will include free breakfast and lunch, and address education, health, finances and leadership issues. The event will be at the Mary McLeod Bethune Center, 140 Martin Luther King Drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
